Castle Rock, on which the fortress sits, has been inhabited by various peoples since ancient times. The first mention of this place dates back to Ptolemy, who described a settlement of the Votadini tribe here. In Roman chronicles, Castle Rock is referred to as "Alauna" - "a rocky place." Some historians believe that people appeared in this area as early as 1000 BC.

The first construction of the castle dates back deep into the Middle Ages. The greatest expansion of the fortress occurred in the 17th century. It was then that Edinburgh Castle became the center of the Scottish capital. On three sides, the fortress is surrounded by sheer, unscalable cliffs. Only one road leads to it, which is highly visible. Therefore, few conquerors could boast of successfully storming the castle. All wars in the country ultimately came down to the siege and conquest of Edinburgh Castle itself, which is still called the "Key to Scotland." In the 18th century, the castle was turned into a prison. Today, Edinburgh Castle holds the status of a national monument and is considered one of the most beautiful castles in the world.
